Our 5‑mil, UV-treated polyethylene tarps create a stale seedbed in as little as 3 weeks!
Here’s how it works:
- The black tarp creates a warm, moist environment which quickly kills established weeds and encourages rapid weed seed germination.
- The newly emerged weeds then face a dark, suffocating environment in which they quickly die.
- Worms and other beneficial organisms soon appear to decompose any organic matter and loosen the soil.
- In three to four weeks (up to six weeks in winter) you will have an almost completely composted and beautiful stale seedbed!
It’s the closest thing yet to “easy gardening”!

This tarp appears to be good quality, but the shipping company slightly damaged it in shipping (not Farmers Friend's fault by any means).
I reached out to let FF know what happened and they took care of it and made it right immediately!

Great product! In the past we were piecing together a dozen small tarps, some of which did a bad job killing the grass. This silage tarp is large but simple to set up and has already started killing the grass beneath it so we can add more dahlia beds.
What a relief

Breaking my arm put me back several months in the Market Garden was a mess. What relief it was to cover the whole garden. Then when the plants were ready, just peel back and plant wow! That was great. The biggest problem I had was no fault but my own is that I have three German Shepherds who thought there was something moving under the tarp when the wind blew the tarp. I had several bite marks and a brand new tarp. I called Farmer's friend for suggestions and they were very helpful by sending me tape repair. What a blessing! Love this concept.
