At the white-thread stage — when a weed is nothing more than a pale root hair under the surface — the lightest touch finishes it. The Wire Weeder is built for exactly that window. A stirrup hoe slices weeds off below the surface — but cut roots can re-establish, and one wrong pass can slice your drip tape too. The Wire Weeder's thin spring wire pulls the whole weed instead, roots and all, so it doesn't come back. No blade means no sliced tape, no nicked stems, and no angle to maintain like a collinear hoe — push it, pull it, work it side to side. It just works. We slimmed the grip profile and optimized the aluminum handle gauge, so the long-handle Wire Weeder now weighs just 1.33 lbs — 14% lighter than the previous 60" version, with an extra 2.5 inches of reach at 62.5". And for the first time there's a short-handle version for hand weeding: 10.5 inches and a featherweight 4.3 ounces, perfect for raised beds, tight interplantings, and close-in work around transplants. Soft grip on both. Your forearms will notice the difference by the end of the first bed.

Three wires for every planting
Every Wire Weeder head is 5" wide, but the wire profile changes how it works. The Flat wire slips without snarls under the drooping leaves of lettuce and other leafy crops. The Two-Flat turns on its side to fit between tightly spaced plants and is the strongest for digging out slightly tougher weeds. The One-Flat blends the best of both — if you're only picking one, start there. None of them have sharp edges, so working close to your crop is stress-free.

When its longtime makers were ready to pass it on, we picked up the torch. Today every Wire Weeder is made by Farmers Friend in Centerville, Tennessee, with the same simple genius that made the original a farm-shed staple — now lighter and more comfortable than ever.
Tech Specs
The Wire Weeder shines in loose, friable, and sandier soils. In heavy clay or rocky ground the wire can't slip under the surface as easily, so it's less effective there — this is a finesse tool, not a demolition tool. Don't use it to hack through tough roots or compacted soil; that's a job for a heavier hoe.
Once a week is the sweet spot. The Wire Weeder is a prevention tool — quick, regular passes while weeds are at the thread stage mean you rarely have to fight big weeds at all. The more consistently you use it, the less total time you spend weeding.
The Flex Tine Weeder covers whole beds fast — blind cultivation over and around established crops. The Wire Weeder is the precision tool for in-row work, tight spacing, and getting right up next to plants.
In soft soil, yes — it will pull more established weeds, especially with the Two-Flat wire, which is the strongest of the three profiles. But its real job is getting weeds before they get big.
