Our 5‑mil, UV-treated polyethylene tarps create a stale seedbed in as little as 3 weeks!
Here’s how it works:
- The black tarp creates a warm, moist environment which quickly kills established weeds and encourages rapid weed seed germination.
- The newly emerged weeds then face a dark, suffocating environment in which they quickly die.
- Worms and other beneficial organisms soon appear to decompose any organic matter and loosen the soil.
- In three to four weeks (up to six weeks in winter) you will have an almost completely composted and beautiful stale seedbed!
It’s the closest thing yet to “easy gardening”!

I bought a 16'X100' silage tarp for some land that I used for a garden summer 2023. It was the first time I had ever used this land for a garden and it was super weedy because it used to be a horse paddock so while the land is very fertile, it was very weedy so I decided I would buy a silage tarp to see if that would help for my 2024 garden in this space. Wish me luck!

I am very happy with my purchase of two silage tarps. More than anything, I am impressed with the customer service at this company! One of my tarps was damaged during shipping and Mandy was super helpful and offered multiple options to rectify the situation. I was really impressed with the quality and super grateful to find a company to offer free shipping. As a beginning small scale farmer this allowed me to do more than I thought I would be able to afford year one. From now on, Farmers friend will be my fist stop for any supplies.
